Clinical trial eligibility, explained simply
· 5 min read · For patients
Roughly a third of trial applications fail on criteria that patients could have checked in advance. Understanding how eligibility is written saves you time and disappointment.
Inclusion vs exclusion criteria
Inclusion criteria describe who the study is for: the diagnosis, stage, age band and prior treatment history. Exclusion criteria describe who cannot safely take part — usually other illnesses, pregnancy, conflicting medication or recent participation in another trial.
Prepare these details before you apply
Sites move faster when you can answer precisely:
- Exact diagnosis and date of diagnosis
- Current medications and doses
- Recent test results (bloods, imaging, biopsy)
- Treatments already tried and how you responded
- How far you can travel and how often
If you do not qualify
A rejection is protocol-specific, not a verdict on you. Ask the site whether a related study is opening, keep your profile current, and enable alerts so new studies reach you automatically.
