How to join a clinical trial in Greece

· 6 min read · For patients

Clinical trials are research studies that test whether a new treatment, device or diagnostic works and is safe. In Greece, trials run at public hospitals, university clinics and private research sites, and most of them are actively looking for participants.

Joining one is free for patients. Sponsors fund the research, which means you should never be asked to pay to take part in a legitimate study.

1. Find studies that match your condition

Start from the condition, not the hospital. Search by diagnosis and location, then check whether the study is still recruiting. TrialBridge pulls recruiting studies for Greece into one searchable list, so you can compare options in a few minutes instead of reading registry entries one by one.

2. Read the eligibility criteria carefully

Every trial defines who can join. The most common criteria are:

  • Age range and sex
  • Confirmed diagnosis and disease stage
  • Previous treatments you have or have not received
  • Other conditions or medications that would exclude you
  • Whether healthy volunteers are accepted

3. Apply and get screened

When you apply, the research site reviews your details and contacts you for a screening visit. Screening usually includes a consultation, blood work and sometimes imaging. It confirms whether you truly fit the protocol — being screened is not the same as being enrolled.

4. Informed consent is yours to control

Before anything begins, the site must explain the study in plain language and give you a written consent form. You can ask questions, take it home, and you can withdraw at any point without losing your standard care.

5. What participation looks like day to day

Expect scheduled visits, tests and a diary or questionnaires. Many studies reimburse travel. Ask the site up front about visit frequency, duration and what happens after the trial ends.
